Monrovia, Liberia – Football fans in particular have taken to social media to express their disappointment on the government’s decision to cut the National Football development funding for the 2025 fiscal year.
Since then, the budget has dropped from $150,000 USD (one hundred fifty thousand US dollars) to ($50,000 USD), which has prompted quick responses from sports fans. The supporters said that the administration is not interested in sports and characterized the cut as regrettable.
The Liberia Football Association (LFA), on the other hand, has announced that the Football World regulatory body (FIFA) has unconditionally allocated 6.8 million US dollars for each of its member nations for forward 3.0, which is valid from 2023 to 2026.
The LFA said that 2.6 million USD was allocated for operating expenses, 1.2 million USD for transportation solidarity and athletic goods, and three million USD for initiatives.
The Liberia Football Association added that each FIFA member nation will get USD 2.4 million for conditional operating costs.
The government is fully in charge of the national team’s participation in international tournaments, including the World Cup and Nations Cup qualifications, coach salary, player per diem, airline tickets, and lodging, notwithstanding the aforementioned sum.
In a similar move, the government has raised the budget for National County Sports Meet from $150,000 to $400,000 USD.
Additionally, $330,000 USD has been set aside by the government for the upkeep of the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) Sports Complex, and $650,000 USD has been allocated for other national sports.
