PROVIDES 20, 000 USD SCHOLARSHIP TO LIBERIAN YOUTH

Monrovia, Liberia – Timothy Weah, a superstar soccer player for the USA and Juventus, has started a scholarship drive for Liberian children. The USD$20,000 is in support of sports and education as part of his trip to Liberia.

The footballer’s scholarship program will help youngsters who are interested in playing sports and want to go to school Montserrado County. On Sunday, July 9, 2023, he officially opened the program at the recently built Sports Pitch in the West Point Township, a slum community in Monrovia.

The scholarship drive was launched at a program planned for his coming to Liberia by the Youth in that community under the theme “You Are Welcome Timothy Weah.”

Tim, as he is referred to, is the son of Liberian President George Weah, who is recognized as one of the best football players in the game’s history. Mr. Weah is the only African player to win all awards in one year, including the Ballon d’Or in 1995 as an African player. George Weah represented the Liberia National team at several CAF competition but, failed to take Liberia to the world cup in his soccer career.

The 23-year-old joined Total Football Academy at the SKD Sports Complex in Liberia after completing his move from French Ligue-1 club Lille FC for around 12 million euros on a five-year deal with a 2 million salary each year with Juventus in Italy, following his father’s footstep. It is recorded that George Weah left France to Italy in seminar manner one is his greatest transfer in his career.

Thomas Kojo, a former player for the George Weah eleven and a former national team coach, is in charge of running the academy. Tim along with his mother, Amb. Clar Marie Weah, First Lady of Liberia, and brother, George Weah Jr. (Cham Weah) donated several sports items to the Academy on Saturday, July 8, 2023.

At the Invincible Sports Park in Sinkor, Monrovia, one of the few athletic venues, Tim is currently self-training to maintain his fitness level.
