The Superintendent and local authorities in Nimba County have lauded ArcelorMittal for the distribution of rice to several communities.
Beneficiaries of the rice distribution included people within affected communities like Gbapa, Seyee-Geh, Makino, and Zolowii, the Superintendent’s office in Sanniquellie, Mother Jonah Orphanage Home, the security apparatus, YMCA Clinic in Yekepa, and the Free Pentecostal Clinic in Camp-4.
In the mining-affected communities, the distribution also targeted elderly residents. Nimba County Superintendent represented by Assistant Superintendent for Development, Railey Myers extended gratitude to AML for the gesture and urged the company to disregard the negative propaganda being spread against its operations.
In separate remarks, the elders welcome the direct approach of the company saying it was the right thing to do, as this will positively impact the locals.
In October, citizens of mining-affected communities in Nimba in a meeting with Internal Affairs Minister Varney Sirleaf expressed that they were not against the operations of ArcelorMittal but want stronger engagement with the company.
The Company noted the call and has since commenced direct engagements. AML’s Community Liaison Officer, Hilton Gortor disclosed that the company would still reach out to other communities and organizations who are earmarked and yet to benefit from the food distribution. Despite the controversy surrounding the signing of the new ArcelorMittal-Liberia, the legislature has signed that the new deal should go on. Reports231 took to the streets of Monrovia to get the view of Liberians concerning the ArcelorMittal deal. Some citizens termed the deal as a good one, while others compared the deal to the Firestone long-term deal. Meanwhile, others argue that the mining company will do more for the development of the country.
