CDC Chairman Kowo Alarm “CDC is Preparing its Political Structures and Mechanisms to Democratically remove Unity Party from Power”

Monrovia, Liberia – Janga Kowo, the chairman of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change, predicts that the ruling Unity Party will lose the 2029 elections. The CDC is preparing to democratically overturn the Unity Party, Kowo said at a press conference held at the party’s temporary office in Sinkor.

The CDC Chairman declared that they are supporters and advocates of democratic rule since the government has completely failed to keep its commitments to the Liberian people. There is nothing the UP can do to stop the Liberian people from overthrowing the Unity Party, he said, adding that “you will be defeated.”

Kowo cautioned the current administration to prepare for a peaceful transition of power while emphasizing that the opposition is still committed to democratic ideals. Alleging political bias, the CDC Chairman also urged lawmakers to reject Jonathan K. Weedor’s candidacy to serve as the National Elections Commission’s acting chairman.

In the sake of peace and democracy, “we, the Congress for Democratic Change, believe that Jonathan Weedor’s appointment should be refused since it is not only dubious and hazardous but also a bad faith move by the current administration,” he stated.

Kowo claims that the nomination goes against the constitutional rules controlling public institutions. He stated that the fact that President Boakai will ask Mr. Weedor to assume leadership of the National Elections Commission while his confirmation is still pending is quite worrisome.

“This is a clear violation of the spirit and intent of recent appointments as provided for in the constitution,” Atty. Kowo continued. “The National Elections Commission is an honest organization with a distinct chain of command.”

As opposition leaders step up their criticism of the Boakai-led government in anticipation of the upcoming election cycle, Kowo’s comments highlight growing political tensions. With ramifications for electoral trust, institutional independence, and Liberia’s democratic trajectory, the CDC’s rejection of Weedor’s candidacy represents an early escalation in political tensions ahead of the 2029 elections.
