Beijing, China—The People’s Republic of China has expressed gratitude for Liberia’s unwavering adherence to the One-China Principle and promised to continue supporting the country in defending its sovereignty, national security, and development program. Under the leadership of Presidents Xi Jinping and Joseph Nyuma Boakai, bilateral ties have achieved a new level of strategic collaboration, people-to-people interactions have improved, and political trust between the two nations has strengthened in recent years.
Liberian Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, had bilateral discussions in Beijing on May 19, 2026. Minister Wang Yi highlighted the two countries’ long-lasting friendship, emphasizing their shared modernization journey and cooperation during significant health emergencies like COVID-19 and Ebola.
According to Wang Yi, “China values Liberia’s commitment to the One-China Principle, supports Liberia in defending its national security and sovereignty, and explores a development path tailored to its own conditions and traditions. ” China is prepared to continue supporting Liberia’s main concerns and fundamental interests.
According to Wang Yi, China will keep supporting Liberia’s social and economic advancement and is looking to expand collaboration in fields like public welfare, trade, and agriculture. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of the “China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges” as a means of fostering relationships in the areas of human resources development, sports, youth, and culture.
Foreign Minister Nyanti, for her part, reiterated Liberia’s adherence to the One-China Policy and respect for China’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, both of which are protected by Liberian law. She conveyed Liberia’s willingness to learn from China’s experiences in reducing poverty and expressed sincere gratitude for China’s longtime support of Liberia’s development and public health initiatives.
According to Nyanti, Liberia is eager to develop high-level contacts with China, increase political confidence, take advantage of the zero-tariff policy, and foster collaboration in the areas of commerce, agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare, and interpersonal relationships. She also underlined Liberia’s readiness to advance world peace and prosperity, work together to protect international justice and equity, and strengthen multilateral cooperation within the UN framework. She also praised China’s attempts to create a human society with a shared future.
