Government Provides Assistance to Disaster-Affected Communities

Monrovia, Liberia – May 1–31, 2026, has been declared World Red Cross Month in Liberia by President Joseph N. Boakai, and the government has increased efforts to aid populations affected by storms, floods, and fire outbreaks around the country. The proclamation, which falls under the global theme “United in Humanity,” reaffirms the nation’s support for humanitarian endeavors and recognizes the critical role that the Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) plays in responding to crises and protecting vulnerable populations.

According to a Liberia Red Cross statement, the proclamation also names May 8 as World Red Cross Day in commemoration of Jean Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, whose birthday is celebrated worldwide as a symbol of compassion and humanitarian service.

However, in his capacity as Chief Patron of the Liberian Red Cross, President Boakai urged residents, government agencies, and civil society organizations to actively take part in events commemorating the month and support initiatives meant to assist families affected by disasters. Gregory T. Blamoh, the secretary general and chief executive officer of the Liberia National Red Cross Society, discussed the significance of the celebration, characterizing it as a powerful acknowledgement of the organization’s humanitarian purpose.

“This recognition by the Government of Liberia highlights the essential role of the Red Cross in protecting humanity and addressing urgent needs across our nation,” Blamoh said.

He stressed that the event is more than just symbolic, characterizing it as a nationwide appeal for aid to families uprooted by recent calamities, particularly storm victims in Nimba and Lofa Counties and survivors of significant fire outbreaks in Rivercess, Nimba, Montserrado, Grand Cape Mount, and Margibi Counties.

“The Red Cross is not merely an institution; it embodies the heartbeat of humanity in Liberia. In times of storms, fire, or health crises, our volunteers are at the forefront as a beacon of hope,” Blamoh said.

“United in Humanity, we renew our commitment to serve humanity impartially, compassionately, and tirelessly because humanity is not just our strength; it is our destiny,” he said.

In recent years, the Red Cross has provided cash assistance to thousands of flood-affected families, supplied farmers with tools and agricultural training, and restored water systems in remote communities. For many beneficiaries, the support has been transformative. “When the flood destroyed our home, we thought all hope was lost. The Red Cross provided us shelter and food, they restored our dignity,” said a mother from Grand Cape Mount County.
