Tapitta, Nimba – The campaign for the Nimba County senatorial by-election scheduled for April 22 is declare open, according to the National Elections Commission (NEC) Monday, March 31, 2025. The announcement was made by the NEC via a media advisory posted on its Facebook page.
The release claims that Madam Davidetta Browne-Lansanah and her fellow commissioners are in Tapitta to announce the opening of campaign activities. They will educate candidates the dos and don’ts of the campaign period as they try to win over their supporters before the election.
Prince Dunbar, NEC’s Director of Communications and the signatory to the announcement, stated that all preparations for the conduct of the senatorial by-election scheduled for April 22, 2025, are proceeding as planned.
It is anticipated that seven candidates will complete and fulfill NEC’s candidacy standards. The sole woman running to succeed the late Senator Prince Y. Johnson is Madam Edith Gongloe-Weh, sister of Cllr. Tiawon Saye Gongloe.
Other candidates include former Representative Richard Mateneckay Tingba of VOLT, George Gonpu of the African Democratic Movement (ADM), Mack Gbliwon of Citizens Movement for Change (CMC), and independent candidate Torbor Wonokay.
Additionally, Samuel Kogar, a representative from Electoral District #5, is vying to fill the void created by the death of the late senator Johnson, the political godfather of the county. Former Representative Garrison Yealu is also seeking the public’s support to fill the seat.
Due to his possession of a forged voter registration card, Justin Oldpa Yeazehn, also known as Prophet Key, was disqualified. On November 29, 2024, Senator Johnson passed away after a protracted illness leaving the people of Nimba county in a sad mood for months. The late senator was seen as their hero and political godfather who always seeked the interest of the people of Nimba.
