As President Boakai praise the $1.8 billion project.

Nimba County – ArcelorMittal Liberia has launch US$1.8 billion Phase 2 Expansion Project – which the company says has reached a transformative stage that promises to reshape Liberia’s mining industry, as one of the largest mining expansion projects undertaken in Africa.

As a key component of ArcelorMittal’s Phase II development, the enormous project is anticipated to boost Liberia’s yearly iron ore production from 5 million to 20 million metric tons, establishing the nation as a regional mining powerhouse and greatly increasing its export revenue.

A gathering of government representatives, foreign dignitaries, investors, and locals from all across the mining belt gathered in Tokadeh, Nimba County, for the ceremonial opening of one of Africa’s biggest iron ore beneficiation plants.

Speaking at the occasion on Thursday, June 5, 2025, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai formally unveiled the long-awaited $1.8 billion concentrator facility built by ArcelorMittal Liberia, signaling what he called “a turning point” in Liberia post-war industrial future and economic change.

“This investment means a lot to many people. We are starting a project that will have an impact on Liberians’ lives all throughout the nation. This is more than simply an industrial advancement; it is a sign of transition and optimism.”

According to AML Executive Chairperson Lakshmi, the phase 2 entails building a cutting-edge concentrator plant, two power plants with a combined capacity of 125 MW, significant railroad improvements, and modernizing Buchanan Port with new berthing facilities and a conveyor system.

As stated at the ceremony, the expansion would double output to 20 million tonnes annually and significantly increase product quality owing to the concentrator investment, putting ArcelorMittal Liberia on pace with top-tier mining operations.

The facility, in Mittal’s opinion, is a strategic vote of confidence in Liberia’s stability and future as well as a financial investment. According to him, “if we didn’t have faith in Liberia and its people, we wouldn’t have made this kind of investment nearly $3 billion. No other business has made as much or as sustained an investment in this nation as ArcelorMittal.”

Through community development programs, technical training, and infrastructural assistance, the firm has helped more than 200,000 Liberians and created over 10,000 direct and indirect employment throughout its two-decade association with the country, according to Mittal. “The advantages are observable,” he remarked. This initiative is closely linked to Liberia’s development, from local jobs to schools and roads.
