Monrovia, Liberia – A three million US dollar grant project to improve child nutrition in Liberia has been launched by the governments of China and Liberia in partnership with UNICEF. In an effort to improve maternal and child nutrition outcomes, the program seeks to boost health and nutrition services, improve infant care, and promote community-level knowledge and cleanliness practices.
Ibrahim Nyei, Deputy Foreign Minister for International Cooperation and Economic Integration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, promised the Liberian government dedication to improve the welfare of its citizens on all fronts. The introduction of the three million child nutrition and health initiative, according to Minister Nyei, represents the friendship between UNICEF, China, and Liberia to guarantee the health of every Liberian child.
The proposal follows cordial interactions with UNICEF and the Chinese government, according to the Deputy Foreign Minister for International Cooperation and Economic Integration. Chinese Ambassador Yin Chengwu reiterated China’s unwavering commitment to cooperating with the Liberian government and development partners in order to raise Liberians’ standard of living.
Ambassador Chengwu noted that the three million USD project will give Liberian children access to vital medical medications, vitamin supplements, and newborn health equipment and training. Speaking on Friday, July 17, 2026, in Monrovia, the Chinese ambassador joined officials from UNICEF and the Liberian government to introduce a $3 million child nutrition initiative for children in Liberia.
The ambassador stated that the project will boost the well-being of people throughout Liberia by addressing the persistent problems of malnutrition and the high rate of infant mortality. He added that the US$3 million child nutrition program’s launch reinforced Liberia and China’s long-standing ties.
Andy Brooks, UNICEF representative in Liberia, emphasized that a child’s development and survival depend heavily on their diet. Mr. Brooks noted that a child’s healthy growth, improved learning, ability to fend off illness, and potential are all facilitated by proper nutrition.
He said that the organization, Liberia, and China enjoyed a strong collaboration, as seen by the start of the $3 million nutrition initiative. The grant will improve community-level nutrition and hygiene practices; health professionals; social workers; and newborn care services, according to the UNICEF Representative. Mr. Brooks promised that UNICEF will supply the technical assistance needed to carry out the initiative.
