Monrovia, Liberia—President Joseph N. Boakai has launched a major campaign against Liberia’s persistent electricity shortage with the dedication of a new 20-megawatt solar farm at Mount Coffee and the declaration that his administration is working swiftly to increase power access, foster industrial growth, and transform the nation’s economy.
President Boakai described the solar project as a significant turning point in Liberia’s development process and evidence that his administration is dedicated to tackling one of the primary obstacles to the country’s economic advancement during his remarks at the dedication ceremony on Friday, June 5, 2026, in Harrisburg, Montserrado County.
“We are in a hurry to deliver services to the Liberian people, emphasizing that the project was completed in less than two years after groundbreaking began in October 2024,” he added.
He pointed out that the new solar facility contributes renewable energy capacity to Liberia’s national grid at a time when access to electricity is still one of the nation’s most enduring development challenges, with communities, businesses, industries, schools, and hospitals continuing to struggle with expensive and unstable power.
The Liberian leader stated that building more electricity infrastructure is a key component of his administration’s economic plan, claiming that dependable power is necessary to draw in investment, increase manufacturing, support agriculture, create jobs, and establish what he called a “vibrant twenty-four-hour economy.”
The president made a direct connection between energy expansion and public safety and national security, stating that increased access to power will boost communications, enhance security services, and make communities safer through better infrastructure and lighting.
He explained that the solar farm is a component of larger government initiatives to increase Liberia’s energy capacity through partnerships with international development organizations and the RESPITE Project. These initiatives include support for the restoration of lost generation capacity at Mount Coffee and future expansion plans.
According to Boakai, Liberia’s long-term goal is to eliminate infrastructure bottlenecks that have impeded development for decades and establish the framework for industrialization and the rise of the private sector. “This solar farm represents an investment in economic growth, job creation, safer communities, and a more resilient future,” the President said.
While celebrating the project’s completion, Boakai acknowledged that significant work remains, stressing the need for expanded transmission systems and broader nationwide access to electricity. “With humility, it is now my greatest pleasure, on behalf of the people of Liberia, to dedicate this project,” he said.
Liberia looks to meet growing electricity demand and accelerate economic development, the project represents one of the most prominent energy costs under Boakai’s administration and shows an increasing focus on renewable energy.
