Monrovia, Liberia – The people of Liberia have been reassured by Minister of Labor Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah that the government will put their welfare first despite its concerns about doing business with international businessmen.
At the usual press briefing held by the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, Minister Kruah made this declaration. He declared that the safety of Liberian citizens would not be jeopardized in order to uphold the laws.
“I must again emphasize that, while we wish to encourage the involvement of our foreign business and investment friends in our labor economy to explore commercial and trading opportunities, we wish to quickly state that the full compliance of our laws will not be compromised and that the safety, welfare and prosperity of our citizens will be our optimal priority.”
In order to compete with their overseas counterparts, Liberians will be given priority under the Boakai administration’s first agenda, the Minister continued.
“We shall ensure that regular, routine and non-technical job placements and vacancies at major companies and other investment entities in our country, will be occupied by qualified Liberians. However, rest assured that our laws will completely respect and protect both your investment portfolios and your rights.”
The Bea Mountain Mining Company in Kinjor, Grand Cape Mount County, has been the subject of recent happenings that have caused instability among its employees and resulting in fatalities.
The Ministers of Justice, Internal Affairs, and Labor organized a Ministerial Committee to resolve the labor abuses that the demonstrators had brought up against the corporation, which they said violated the 2015 Decent Work Act. The Committee met with the demonstrators, other interested parties, Bea Mountain management, and staff in order to resolve the issue, which has now been resolved.
