Solomon Weawea Warns of Looming Legislative Impasse

Calls on Lawmakers to Prioritize Liberia–Guinea Border Issue

Monrovia, Liberia – A Liberian living in the United States named Solomon Weawea has expressed concerns about a possible legislative deadlock and urged legislators to put national interests ahead of internal conflicts. “We need to focus on how we can get the Guineans out of our border through diplomatic means. This is a priority and the legislature needs to focus on,” Weawea said.

He referenced the 2025 removal of former Speaker Fonati Koffa, describing it as a prolonged and difficult episode in the legislature. According to him, a proposed solution introduced three weeks into the crisis was initially dismissed but later adopted after seven months, following significant hardship for the people of Liberia.

Weawea commended Koffa’s leadership during the impasse, pointing out that the former Speaker resigned to maintain national stability rather than escalate the controversy. He claimed that this action restored peace without forcing the opposition group to obtain the 49 votes required for his ouster.

He also called on the legislature to take fast action to resolve the current border conflict between Guinea and Liberia, emphasizing the importance of the issue for the country.

Weawea also warned against dismissing former legislator Yekeh Kolubah for his recent comments, saying that doing so may take focus away from the more urgent problem of the border situation, which he maintains should continue to be the legislature’s primary priority.
